A beautiful 2024 Gibson Les Paul Standard ’50s in Tobacco Burst, and a particularly appealing version thanks to the factory P-90 pickup configuration.

 

The Standard ’50s takes the modern USA Les Paul back towards the feel and construction of the originals, with a solid mahogany body, figured maple top, no weight relief, a fuller rounded ’50s neck profile and traditional hardware throughout.

 

This one looks superb in person. The Tobacco Burst finish has a warm amber centre with a darker outer edge, while the figured maple top has enough movement to give it plenty of character without looking overdone.

 

It weighs 9lb 2.3oz, which gives it the solid, substantial feel you would expect from a non-weight-relieved Les Paul.

 

P-90 Pickups

 

The big attraction with this particular example is the pair of Gibson P-90 soapbar pickups.

 

P-90s give a Les Paul a very different character from the more common humbucker setup. There is still plenty of body and midrange, but with more bite, openness and definition.

 

The neck pickup is warm and rounded without becoming muddy, while the bridge has plenty of attack and aggression when pushed. With the volume rolled back they clean up beautifully, making this a very versatile Les Paul despite the traditional layout.

 

The guitar uses the familiar Gibson control arrangement of two volume controls, two tone controls and a three-way toggle switch.

 

Traditional ’50s Construction

 

The body is mahogany with a figured maple top and no weight relief, keeping the specification firmly rooted in the traditional Les Paul formula.

 

The mahogany neck uses Gibson’s Vintage ’50s rounded profile, paired with a rosewood fingerboard, 22 frets and acrylic trapezoid inlays.

 

It has the fuller neck feel associated with the ’50s Standard, but without being excessive. Combined with the P-90s, it gives the guitar a very direct, lively response.

 

Hardware

 

The hardware follows the traditional ’50s theme with an ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic bridge, aluminium stop bar tailpiece, Vintage Deluxe tuners with Keystone buttons, nickel hardware and amber top hat knobs with pointers.

 

The cream P-90 covers and plastics suit the Tobacco Burst finish perfectly and give the guitar a very classic look.

 

Condition

 

This guitar has clearly been well looked after and remains in cherished overall condition, with only light signs of use.

 

There is one small ding/mark on the front, shown clearly in the photographs, together with a few very minor surface marks and light playwear around the body.

 

There is also some very minor buckle rash to the back. It is light rather than heavy wear and does not detract much from the overall presentation.

 

The binding, top and back all present very well, with only the sort of minor marks you would expect from careful use.

 

The neck appears to have been lightly de-glossed or sanded, leaving it somewhere between gloss and satin in feel. Visually it remains tidy, but in the hand it feels smoother and less sticky than a fully glossed Gibson neck, which makes it particularly comfortable to play.

 

The frets are in very good condition and show no obvious signs of heavy use.

 

The original Gibson hard case is included and remains in good used condition, with the expected light external marks from storage and use.
